A large literature explains the rise of populist parties with the economic insecurities stemming from globalization and technological change. But despite the long-standing focus of the comparative and international political economy literature on fiscal policy, these studies largely ignore governments and their economic policies. This article brings policy back into the picture by reviewing the research agenda on the political effects of fiscal policy, and fiscal austerity in particular.

Mihály Fazekas has published co-authored paper with CEU alumni, Bence Tóth, Johannes Wachs, and Aly Abdou on using machine learning for detecting cartels in public procurement in the International Journal of Industrial Organization. The article addresses the daunting challenge of identifying and countering price fixing, bid rigging and collusion among public procurement bidders across Europe.

We are proud to see that our colleague Mihály Fazekas has been ranked as the world’s top researcher in both corruption and public procurement according to the latest ScholarGPS rankings (Last 5 Years).

In it, and based on the Horizon EU project BRRIDGE, they compare four European countries - Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany - in how climate movements establish cooperation and linkages with the political system (or not).
