Evelyne Hübscher publishes new paper in Comparative Political Studies

DPP Associate Professor Evelyne Hübsches has published a co-authored paper in Comparaive Political Studies. The main question of the article is the following: how do voters judge IMF interventions?  Together with Thomas Sattler and Markus Wagner, she finds that voters often see IMF interventions more positively than generally assumed. Survey experiments conducted in four European crisis countries show that interventions by the IMF increase the public support for unpopular policies, such as fiscal adjustments.

Recent shifts in parts of the world towards populism and authoritarianism require broadened attention to an increasingly wide range of contexts in which human rights are being curtailed. While major conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, are glaring environments where abuse of power has impacted human rights, social justice is currently at stake in a variety of arenas even in established democracies, from migration and women’s health, to debates over censorship in education.
