The flagship George Soros Visiting Chair program has brought some of the most eminent academics and practitioners to join the Department of Public Policy over the past few years. This year again, the program boasts an impressive lineup of four chairs, who will join the department in the Winter and Spring terms of this academic year.
We will be thrilled to welcome Ariane Chebel d'Appollonia and Simon Reich in the Winter term.
Ariane Chebel d'Appollonia is a professor in the School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) and in the Division of Global Affairs (DGA) at Rutgers University, Newark. She is also an affiliated Senior Researcher at Sciences Po Paris. Professor Chebel d’Appollonia has published two edited volumes, and solely authored six books. Her more recent books include Les Frontières du Racisme (Presses de Sciences Po, 2011), Frontiers of Fears: Immigration and Insecurity in the United States and Europe (Cornell University Press, 2012), and How Does it Feel to Be a Treat? Migrant Mobilization and Securitization in the US and Europe (Palgrave Macmillan and NYU Press, 2015).
Simon Reich is a professor in the Division of Global Affairs and Department of Political Science at Rutgers’ Newark campus since 2008. He also holds an appointment as a Chercheur Associé at the Center for International Studies (CERI) at Sciences Po (Paris). Reich has published thirteen books; his more recent ones include The End of Grand Strategy (Cornell, 2018); Comparative Grand Strategy: A Framework and Cases (Oxford, 2019); and his recently published Across Type, Time and Space: American Grand Strategy in Comparative Perspective (Cambridge, 2021).
We are equally delighted to announce the appointment of Thierry Balzacq and David Tolbert for the Spring term.
Thierry Balzacq is Professor of Political Science at Sciences Po and Professorial Fellow at CERI-Sciences Po, Paris. He has published over a hundred and fifty books, articles and book chapters on comparative grand strategy, theories of security, and diplomatic studies. His most recent books include The Oxford Handbook of Grand Strategy (2021) and Comparative Grand Strategy: A Framework and Cases (Oxford University Press, 2019), which was n°2 in the Annual reading list of the journal International Affairs in 2020.
David Tolbert is Ford Foundation Fellow and Visiting Scholar, at Duke University, Sanford School of Public Policy, and a consultant for the Kofi Annan Foundation, on peace and justice issues. From 2010 to 2018, he served as President at the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ). He is the author of over forty scholarly articles and numerous op-eds and other writings on international criminal justice, transitional justice and rule of law issues.
