CMDS' Joost van Beek and Kate Coyer presented preliminary research findings from their study on the digital content sharing and archiving practices of community media around Europe at the international conference “Radio Archives in European Community Media,” which took place in Halle, Germany, on June 5-6.

In a faculty research seminar on June 4, Visiting Professor Péter Bajomi-Lázár explained reasons behind political party colonization of media in Central and Eastern Europe. In his recent research, Bajomi-Lázár has delved into why there is a media freedom deficit in Eastern Europe as compared to Western Europe, as well as why media freedom fluctuates over time within and across post-communist countries.
The Center for Media, Data and Society (CMDS) and Freedom House organized a panel discussion on May 21 to consider some of the conclusions of the recent Freedom House report, Freedom of the Press 2015.
A student-faculty team from SPP won a best paper award for their research on drones. Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick (SPP assistant professor) and Tautvydas Juskauskas (MPA ’15) received the Best Paper Award for Technical Excellence at the Humanitarian Technology (HumTech 2015) conference in May. HumTech 2015 focuses on bringing innovative solutions to the humanitarian aid community.
