Coming up in the Winter 2014 Media and Change Discussion Series:

Media in Polarized Societies: A Case Study of Turkey

Speaker: Selcan Kaynak, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey)

Thursday March 6, SPP building (Oktober 6 utca, 7) room 201 @ 12.45

The functioning of the media as a public watchdog is a model that is seen as vital in democracies. However, in societies with major social rifts these functions may conflict with one another and alter the media’s role. This talk will focus on a media system in a highly polarized society, Turkey. In recent years, with the increase in the Justice and Development Party's power over the critical economic and political institutions, the mainstream media have taken a central role, becoming both a crucial actor as part of the struggle and the space in which this struggle takes place. As the media come to function as part of the political establishment, the impact is twofold: loss of an important public watchdog and a deepening of societal rifts.

Selcan Kaynak is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Bogazici University in Istanbul. Her work focuses on the media and politics from a comparative perspective. Her research interests include the media and globalization, new technologies and social change, and political psychology.

The short presentation will be followed by a group discussion.

----------------------------

Now in its third year, the Media and Change lunch series aims at creating a space for reflection and informal discussion about media policies, perils, potentials, and practices. We view this as an opportunity for networking with each other and fellow faculty, students, staff and researchers interested in the media, communication and technological transformations taking hold.

Sandwiches will be provided on a first come, first served basis. Please bring your own beverage.
----------------------------

We are always interested in new ideas for discussion topics and presentations, and encourage volunteers from faculty, students and staff to moderate future sessions.
