SPP's Daniel Large gave a presentation on the changing norms in security in Africa and China's participation in peace in the region at a conference in South Africa on Nov. 12 and 13.

Entitled 'BRICS and Africa: A Partnership for Sustainable Development?', the conference, which was held in Johannesburg, was organized by the South African Institute for International Affairs, based in Johannesburg, and the BRICS Policy Centre, based in Rio de Janeiro.

The conference investigated the deepening relationship between Africa and BRICS countries, providing insights into the opportunities and challenges posed by this global transformation for Africa in the 21st century. It brought together policymakers, civil society actors and scholars from South Africa, Brazil, India, China, Russia and other countries to discuss the foreign policies of BRICS countries towards Africa, their role as development partners, their trade policies, and role in fostering security and stability on the continent.

Large is a research associate with SAIIA's Global Powers and Africa programme with which he recently published a policy brief entitled China-South Sudan: Governance in Emerging Relations. At SPP, Large teaches the core course on the development of modern governance and elective courses covering the politics of the global South.
