One-year MAPP candidate,
Class of 2016
Researcher and Policy Analyst, International Telecommunication Union
I am working as a researcher and policy analyst at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva. ITU is the UN specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs). I am currently researching the gender digital divide, the term that is used to describe an imbalance in the access to digital services, ICT literacy, and in the presence of women in STEM studies (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). I have also had the chance to work on issues related to smart cities, entrepreneurship, and SDGs (UN Sustainable Development Goals).
The internship has been great so far. I have been able to apply some practical skills in research design, data collection, and policy analysis. I am also extremely lucky to have a supervisor who is really committed to helping us develop as professionals. He wants to make sure that interns get some added value from their internship, so we are invited to participate in training sessions and all kinds of UN events and conferences. We also get to practice our presentation skills regularly.
Meeting amazing professionals from all over the world has been the most rewarding aspect of the internship. I am working with smart and creative colleagues who are always happy to help and give advice. I share the office with a fellow Latin American, a woman from Nicaragua who I already consider a close friend. I came to ITU without knowing a single person here, but found friendly and supportive people right away.
I think this internship will have a considerable impact on my longer-term career goals. I have gained first-hand experience in the international development arena, improved my research and analysis skills, and acquired valuable knowledge on how to enhance the use of ICTs as drivers of sustainable development and growth. I am really grateful for the help I got from SPP Career Services in preparing the application package. They didn't just review my CV and cover letter. I had many talks with Ann and Marija about career goals and strategies. I cannot thank them enough. The selection process was tough. It included several interviews and a long assignment, but it was definitely worth it.
Geneva is a great place to spend the summer. There are lots of cultural activities, free concerts, and festivals. I have also taken many trips to nearby towns and villages. I love the Alpine landscape, beautiful lakes, medieval castles and, of course, Swiss cheese and chocolate.
