Sebastian Soto, Chile
MPA student,
Class of 2017
Intern, Educafrica Foundation
I'm doing my internship in Nairobi, Kenya, with Educafrica Foundation, a Chilean NGO working in two schools located in the slums of Kibera and Mathare. The NGO's main objective is to assist these schools by providing educational training for teachers and students to improve students' learning outcomes and to strengthen the schools' infrastructure. I am conducting a general evaluation of the educational program being implemented by Educafrica, and will produce a report that will identify the main strengths and weaknesses of this program. I've also been asked to provide suggestions on how to improve the NGO's policies regarding the assistance that they currently provide.
During my visits to the schools, I have gotten to know each school community and the surrounding urban environment. I have talked with the teachers, students, and directors of the schools, which has given me a better understanding of how the education system works in Kenya. As part of my research, I am conducting interviews with teachers, and observing classes and teacher workshops. In the process, I have learned a lot about how to apply and combine different methodologies when doing qualitative research. My internship has been an excellent opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I gained during the first year of the MPA program—especially the research skills.
This internship has been amazing in other ways too. I have enjoyed new experiences, both in terms of the people I've met and also the places I've been able to visit. Going to the slums you see the big differences that exist in the world in terms of poverty and inequality. I've also been struck by the warm reception I have received from children who are eager to learn from the "mzungus" (foreigner). It makes you feel that you can make a difference, and help these children achieve a better future. Education is a crucial tool for improving human capital and for achieving development goals.
Nairobi is an interesting place to explore. During my free time, I have had the chance to visit places such as the Elephant Orphanage, a Giraffe Centre, and the Maasai National Reserve, where I went on a safari. These were amazing experiences that I will never forget.
