Anand Murugesan is an economist at the Department of Public Policy, CEU. His research combines insights from economics and related disciplines with causal inference methods, using experimental and observational data to examine behavior and social issues. His recent work explores the economic impact of conflicts in India, the lasting influence of Habsburg imperial history on contemporary behaviors, and the role of beliefs and norms in democratic participation.
Before joining CEU, Anand was at the University of California, Merced. At CEU, he teaches economics for policy, as well as electives on development and causal inference methods. He co-authored Demystifying Causal Inference with Vikram Dayal.
Anand is a Senior Researcher (part-time) at the University of Vienna, where he collaborates with Jean-Robert Tyran on the Horizon Europe-funded research project Emotional Politics of Democracies (ENCODE). He is also a Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Vienna, and an affiliate at the Democracy Institute, Budapest.
