Join the CEU team for the Allianz Summer Academy, on ‘The EU in the international arena – ready to compete?’, Kempfenhausen (Munich) 30 July – 3 August 2010
Central European University, together with Ludwig-Maximilians Universität (Munich), Bocconi University (Milano), Charles University (Prague), and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Geneva), is taking part in the 2011 edition of the Allianz Summer Academy on Europe. The theme this year will be: ‘The EU in the international arena – ready to compete?’.
The Allianz Summer Academy, which takes place from 30 July to 3 August 2011, in the idyllic setting of the Allianz Group Management Institute in Kempfenhausen, near Munich, is the culmination of a year-long reflexion project, bringing together five students from each university around a common topic related to the annual theme.
Participation in the Summer Academy is free for the selected CEU students, and Allianz Kulturstiftung covers for housing, meals and transport during the time of the Summer Academy.
Students from any CEU departments should apply on an individual basis. The eligibility conditions are that students must be in possession of a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), be fluent in English, and have good academic credentials; in addition, they must show strong academic and personal motivations for European Union issues, and be ready to commit themselves for the whole duration of the project. They should also have good social skills and be able to work as part of a team.
Application & selection
The deadline for application is 19 November 2010. Applicants should send a CV and 1-2 pages motivation letter by e-mail to the CEU coordinator, Prof. Marie-Pierre Granger, at grangerm@ceu.hu. Interviews with short-listed candidates will be held on one specific day, between 24 and 30 November 2010. The selected candidate will be informed by Friday 3 December 2010.
The selection is on a competitive basis, and will be based essentially on the motivation, academic performance, knowledge of EU issues and social skills of the applicants; also, as far as possible, it will provide for the representation of various disciplines taught at CEU.
Further information
Once the CEU student team is constituted, its members must meet and choose a topic related to the annual theme (December 2010). Once this is agreed, the team meets regularly (minimum two-three times a month) and works towards the drafting of a report on the chosen topic. This report must assess the situation and draw conclusions. A preliminary report should be submitted in April 2011, and the final report of 6000-8000 words should be submitted on 1 April 2011.
The final reports of each University team will be exchanged between the teams and discussed during the first day of the Summer Academy. After that, each member of the each university team will join a different working group, where he/she will work with one participant of each other university, on one of the horizontal issues set out by the University coordinators, which emerged out of the University reports. The work of the study groups eventually feeds into the Allianz Summer Academy Manifesto., which closes the Summer Academy.
Allianz Summer Academy Alumni Networks
Once you are selected to take part in the Academy, you will become a member of the Allianz Summer Academy Alumni Networks which offers plenty of opportunities for conferences participation, project-funding, publications, internships, etc (from the CEU team which took part in 2009, one alumni got funding for a debating society project, another got an internship, etc.). Besides, every second year, there is an Alumni Conference (the next one in 2012 will be in Berlin) to which all Alumni are invited.
