Lecture: The Return of the Right in Latin America: Causes and Prospects

A panel of Professors Julia Buxton (SPP), Sandor Nagy (Corvinus) and visiting Erasmus teaching fellow Jorge Nallim (University of Manitoba) considered the return of the political right in Latin America. The event drew a large audience, including the much welcomed attendance of students from Corvinus.

Democratic Backsliding in the European Union

Nick Sitter (School of Public Policy) and Elisabeth Bakke (University of Oslo) publish an article in the Oxford University Press Encyclopedia of European Union Politics on-line version, on Democratic Backsliding in the European Union. It argues that democratic backsliding in EU member states are not only a policy challenge for the EU, but a potential existential crisis because it undermined the credibility of its rule-of-law-based system.

Workshop: Political Economy of Development: Democratic Institutions and Poverty Alleviation

The Institute for Advanced Study, The School of Public Policy and the CEU Doctoral School organized a workshop which discussed different approaches to the ongoing problem of widespread poverty in developing countries. In the center of the discussion is the problematic of the synergy effects of democratic institutions and targeted social programs, such as conditional cash transfer programs – CCTs – for alleviation of poverty.

CEU CPS’s Krizsán receives inaugural Emma Goldman Award

Andrea Krizsán, Research Fellow at the Center for Policy Studies and adjunct faculty at the School of Public Policy, receives inaugural Emma Goldman award for her extraordinary expertise on, and engagement with, scholarship in the field of feminist and inequality issues. The Awards were awarded on February 13th at the Vienna Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) by Mieke Verloo, Chair of the FLAX Foundation.
