How do insurgents rule? This seminar will explore rebel governance, the development of official structures and practices to regulate social and political life during conflict, using the cases of the Rally for Congolese Democracy in Congo, and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in rebel-controlled area, this seminar will present insights from Professor Mampilly's book Rebel Rulers: Insurgent Governance and Civilian Life during War (Cornell University Press, 2011).

Zachariah Mampilly is Director of Africana Studies and Associate Professor of Political Science and International Studies at Vasser College. The Africana Studies is a multidisciplinary program promoting a focused, critical study of the people, cultures and institutions of Africana and the African diaspora. He was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Dar es Salaam in 2012-2013.

This seminar is hosted by the CEU Africa Research Group.
