In his presentation, Dan O'Brien, who specializes in European affairs and in global trade and investment issues, will explore the dramatic growth in Ireland's economy in recent years and discuss some of the lessons learned for Central European economies. O'Brien identifies a number of long-term challenges for Europe including the need to generate growth, heal North/South divisions, stabilize the Franco-German link, strengthen European institutions, and build trust and legitimacy in the EU.
Dan O'Brien is chief economist of the Institute of International and European Affairs in Dublin, Ireland; an adjunct senior research fellow at the School of Politics and International Relations, University College Dublin; and a columnist and economics analysis for Independent Newspapers. He was formerly economics editor of the Irish Times, analyzing and commenting on a wide range of Irish, European, and global issues. Prior to that he spent a dozen years in London and Geneva as senior economist and editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit, an arm of The Economist Newspaper Group. O'Brien has also worked for the European Commission and as a consultant for the United Nations and Forfas, an Irish government in-house think tank.
