The School of Public Policy at Central European University
cordially invites you to a Public Lecture by
Oliver Stuenkel, Assistant Professor of International Relations,
Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), São Paulo
The transformation of the BRICS acronym from an investment term into a political grouping is one of the most significant developments in global governance over the past decade. Yet what does it mean for the future of global order? Are the BRICS countries seeking to create parallel structures that will weaken current institutions, or are they merely seeking to reform today's order? Was the BRICS grouping's refusal to criticize Russia during the Crimean Crisis an outlier or does it portend the formation of an anti-Western alliance?"
Oliver Stuenkel is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) in São Paulo, where he coordinates the São Paulo branch of the School of History and Social Science (CPDOC) and the executive program in International Relations. He is also a non-resident Fellow at the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) in Berlin and a member of the Carnegie Rising Democracies Network. His research focuses on rising powers; specifically on the foreign policies of Brazil, India, and China, and on their impact on global governance. He is the author of IBSA: The Rise of the Global South? (Routledge Global Institutions, 2014) and the forthcoming BRICS and the Future of Global Order (Lexington, 2014).
