DPP Research Fellow Laura Rahm participated in the launch of Phase III of the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to End Child Marriage. This event took place in New York City on March 14, during the 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68). The high-level event, jointly convened by the governments of Canada and the United States, marked a milestone in global efforts to eradicate child marriage. It focused on lessons learned from programming efforts to end child marriage over the past eight years, and on ways forward to expand reach and accelerate progress towards its elimination. Nearly one in five young women were married before the age of 18, affecting 650 million women and girls worldwide. Despite a declining global rate of child marriage, there is an urgent need for accelerated action. The Global Programme leverages transnational partnerships and knowledge exchange to tackle this issue, supporting governments and civil society partners—including women- and youth-led organizations and feminist movements—to intensify efforts to abolish child marriage.
