Ariane Chebel d’Appollonia, George Soros Visiting Chair at DPP in the winter term, held a public lecture on March 2 titled Is Violent America Europe's Future? Chebel d'Appollonia, a professor at Rutgers University, Newark and an affiliated Senior Researcher at Sciences Po Paris, discussed some of the negative sides of identity politics in the United States, building on the work of her forthcoming book, as well as how this leads to division of the left and an ever-increasing polarization of the political landscape in America. She then compared these findings in the US with some more recent developments in various European countries, and concluded that what we see in the US today could also be the future in European polities. These similarities can both be seen on the right of the political spectrum, where far-right movements increasingly adopt Trump-styled tactics to gain electoral success, but also on the left where contentious identity politics becomes ever more visible as well.
