“Patronage, Trust and State Capacity: The Historical Trajectories of Clientelism,” wins best paper by Cristina Corduneanu-Huci

Cristina Corduneanu-Huci wins the 2017 Best Paper Award from the Comparative Democratization section of the American Political Science Association.

Corduneanu-Huci won the 2017 award for the best paper on Comparative Democratization presented at the previous year’s American Political Science Association convention, for her work with co-author Lenka Bustikova from Arizona State University. The article, “Patronage, Trust and State Capacity: The Historical Trajectories of Clientelism,” has appeared in World Politics in April 2017.

The selection committee chose the paper for ‘its important contributions to the literature on state capacity, economic development, and democratic institutions.’ The article examines the historical origins of trust in states to show that they have a lasting impact on patronage, even in wealthy democracies, and provides a demand side and supply side explanation for the persistence of political clientelism. Cristina received the award on August 31st during a ceremony held in San Francisco, at this year’s APSA annual convention.
