Advocacy Intern, Mental Disability Advocacy Centre
I am an advocacy-intern at the Mental Disability Advocacy Centre (MDAC) in Budapest. My primary task is to conduct research on UN conventions and jurisprudence that will be used to create a database for people living with mental or psychosocial disabilities. I am also responsible for editing the organization's internal newsletter. This responsibility has given me a great opportunity to become familiar with the key people and current news and events in this field. I have also learned a lot about how an international nonprofit organisation functions.
I am very grateful to MDAC that has offered me space and support to work on topics that are close to my heart. It has been an inspiring and valuable internship experience. I have developed important skills, acquired knowledge, and made connections. This internship has also convinced me that I want to pursue a career in disability advocacy and disability rights. I have been fortunate to meet a university professor this summer who has a degree in psychology and is also a lawyer dealing with disability-related issues. I see now how my background in psychology can be integrated with this type of work.
Athough I have spent my summer in my home country of Hungary, I have met people from all corners of the globe. It has been interesting and fun to explore new restaurants and bars in a city where I have been living for four years!
