Dorina Nini, Albania
One-year MAPP candidate,
Class of 2016
Intern, Embassy of Albania in Hungary
This internship has given me an inside look at diplomacy in action. I have been able to see how Albanian foreign policy is handled, formulated, and interpreted by a small, but committed team.
The core mission of the Albanian Embassy in Hungary is to protect Albania's national interests, prevent potential miscommunication between the two countries, promote democratic stability in the region, and contribute to the economic development of Albania by encouraging foreign investment and tourism.
I have been able to participate in a number of events this summer. In June, for example, I attended a lecture at the Institute for Foreign Affairs and Trade in Budapest on EU integration and regional cooperation by the Albanian Minister for Foreign Affairs His Excellency Mr. Bushati. It was interesting to hear his perspective, and also a good networking opportunity.
In addition to the many people I am meeting this summer, I am also learning a lot about how foreign policy is actually made, what the process is. I am also getting exposure to very different policy areas such as international trade and communications, as well as cultural exchanges and integration. I think this experience will make me a much stronger and more well-rounded candidate for a career in government service.
What has been most valuable to me about this internship though is the feeling that I am doing something worthwhile – that I am actually contributing to my country.
