Savithar Chiarapong (School of Public Policy at Central European University student)

Savithar Chiarapong, Thailand
Mundus MAPP candidate,
Class of 2017

Intern, Central Bank of Hungary, Budapest

Chiarapong didn't have to travel far for her internship at the Central Bank of Hungary. It did take some work to find, though. She received guidance and assistance from Mundus MAPP Senior Program Manager Heni Griecs, CEU professors, and SPP's Office of Career Services.

As an intern at the Macroprudential Policy Department at the Central Bank of Hungary, Chiarapong was assigned to conduct research on real estate macroprudential policies that have been implemented by some Asian countries. The goal was "to examine the prudential instruments launched by these economies so as to guide the introduction of macroprudential policies in Hungary," she explains. She says that she is particularly pleased that a research paper she wrote "could make a valuable contribution to the implementation of macroprudential policies in Hungary."

Macroprudential policies, which aim to reduce instability across financial systems, have received increased attention since the 2007-08 financial crisis. Thanks to her experience at the Central Bank of Hungary, Chiarapong now has a much deeper knowledge and understanding of those policies. Chiarapong says that her internship will be enormously helpful when she resumes her career at the Bank of Thailand after she graduates.

Chiarapong says that she gained much more than valuable knowledge and experience during her internship. She also benefited from building connections with "terrific colleagues" at the Central Bank of Hungary, "thereby strengthening and expanding my central bankers' networks."
