This year CEU is once again taking part in the Allianz Summer Academy (ASA) with the main theme of Europe at a Turning Point: Economic Crisis, Social Disintegration, Political Change. Teams from five universities present their reports on topics of their own choosing related to the main theme.
The CEU Team consists of students from the Department of Public Policy (Lena Jacobs and Galen Lamphere-Englund), International Relations and European Studies (Max Steuer) and Nationalism Studies (Sara Sudetic).
The team is developing a report entitled Open Borders, Closed Minds: EU Asylum Policy in Crisis. It will include evaluation of EU policy instruments in asylum matters from the perspective of EU values, in particular fundamental rights, and a case study on the implementation of these instruments in Hungary.
ASA offers an excellent opportunity for peer learning and discussing about the current stance of the EU in an international environment, which was one of the core motivations for participation for the team. The project focuses on the nexus of fundamental rights and asylum policies in the EU. Specifically, the Hungarian case aims to highlight the challenges and potential shortcomings behind legal instruments that are exacerbated by both increasing refugee flows into the border areas of the EU and the growing anti-migrant populist rhetoric of numerous (not only) Hungarian political elites.
The CEU team presented their initial findings on June 1, 2015. You can read a draft of their report here. If you are interested in the topic or would like to attend the preliminary presentation, please contact asa_ceu@ceu.edu.
