The Center for Media, Data and Society at the CEU School of Public Policy launched the Public Media Speakers Series on March 2 with a public lecture by Jawhar Sircar, India's longest serving culture secretary.

Sircar also headed two of India’s national public broadcasters, All India Radio and Doordarshan, for nearly five years. The event was organized in cooperation with the CEU South Asia Research Group (SARG).

“This position is a perfect fit for me,” explained alumna Ilana Ullman (MAPP ’16). “In addition to working on issues I'm passionate about, I'm excited at the opportunity to live and work in Budapest and to continue to be a part of the CEU community.” Ullman has returned to Budapest as a policy and communications analyst with Ranking Digital Rights (RDR), a project she has been working on since October 2016.

In a public lecture at the Center for Media, Data and Society (CMDS) on November 28, journalist and media policy consultant Olaf Steenfadt discussed the importance of media pluralism and changes within the media industry. “Independence and pluralism of media, opinions, and views - including criticism of people in power - is the safeguard of a healthy democratic system,” Steenfadt said.

The divergence in data protection standards and enforcement, not just between the EU and the United States but among countries around the world, has a profound impact on international trade.
