Lucia Sobekova (MPA '16) has been working as a consultant on drug policy for the International Crisis Group Latin American Office. In addition to researching the links between drugs and crime in Latin America, she attended UNGASS so that she could inform International Crisis Group about its implications for the future of drug policy.

Since commodity prices started crashing in 2013-14, many resource-rich countries around the world have experienced hardship. Some, like Ghana, Mongolia, and Venezuela, have experienced budget crises, requiring painful public spending cuts. Others, like Guinea, Kazakhstan, and Zambia, have delayed oil or mining projects or reduced taxes to try to attract investment.
"What is development as practiced by China?" asked Jing Gu, director of the Centre for Rising Powers and Global Development and convener of the Rising Powers in International Development Programme at the Institute of Development Studies. She went on to note that China is having a tremendous global impact, especially on low-income developing countries in Africa and Latin America.
China is not one yet, explained economist, broadcaster, and author Linda Yueh, but it has the makings of an economic superpower.
